Eagle Notes

Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year! I believe it is going to be our best year ever! We have spent the last year reflecting on and being thankful for the men and women who, over the last 40 years, have given of their time, talents, energy and pocketbooks to build Southwest Christian School into the first-class learning community that we are today.

Our mission is to provide a Christ-centered, college preparatory education that equips young adults to be Christian leaders in the world. I wonder if any of our early leaders envisioned that we would be sending students all over the world on mission- and education-focused trips? Did they picture students learning Chinese in our classrooms? As technology causes our world to become “flatter,” the programming at our high school continues to expand, broadening the horizons for our students. This year, we are able to offer a few new courses for our students, including AP English Language and AP Spanish Language. Our Physics Ignite curriculum will move to a new Engineering Design and Problem Solving course, to the Honors Physics program, and be open to all interested students as an extracurricular activity. Our visual arts course selections will now include a 3D Art class – I can’t wait to see the sculptures, ceramics, and other media that emerge from those students’ heads, hearts and hands.

Always, we keep Jesus Christ at the center of all that we do. Our academic departments will focus on how God’s word can best be integrated into the very framework of the courses we teach. I am delighted about our new science elective, Astronomy, which will be taught from a Christian world view. Three of our staff have been trained this summer at the Life Calling Institute at Indiana Wesleyan University so that we can implement an exciting new College and Career Seminar elective that will help students understand the calling and purpose that God has for their lives.

Before we know it, the Drumline will be marching down the hall to herald our first home football game! In the meantime, we are busy at school planning and preparing for the return of our students in August. Education in the 21st Century is a complex process, and we are thankful to have the opportunity to partner with you in the education of your student. I hope that you will be actively engaged in your child’s education and that you will plug in to the joyful life of our school as a volunteer or just as a fan for our kids. Just as it took the dedication of those who have gone before us for the past 40 years to be where we are today, we know that we can’t go where the Lord intends for us to go for the next 40 years without you. God bless you and yours, and I look forward to the opportunity to visit with you.

Together in His service,

Marilyn Dardenne
High School Principal
