Elementary Arts Academy Launched

The Elementary Arts Academy is an educational opportunity for students in grades 4-6 that essentially extends the school day. Students will be instructed in the arts in addition to the core instruction offered in the curricular day. This is a wonderful opportunity for elementary students interested in furthering their education in Music, Theatre, and/or Studio.  The Academy aligns with our K-12 SCS Fine Arts instruction and programming.

Elementary Fine Arts develops disciplines which stimulate creative and organic expression. Students express and refine their creativity through works of art, both visual and in performance, critical thinking of the arts, and a cultural awareness of the world around them with Christ at the center.

Programming includes:
Beginner Band
Choir
Introduction to Theatre Arts
Improvisational Acting
Studio Art
Private Music Lessons in voice/instrument
Elementary Main Stage Performance

Boys' Golf Wins State for 3rd Time

Defending State Champs knew a bull's eye had been placed on their backs by every other golf program this season. In order to keep the title, nothing less than a stellar performance each and every week would do.

After successfully winning district and regionals, the team headed south this week to Waco for the inevitable championship defense.  Day one ended with the boys trailing by a stroke to Houston Second Baptist.  However, day two proved SCS boys had it in them to overcome the deficit.  Led by Coach Michael Martin, SCS won their third State Title in four years. This year came down to the final putt sunk by freshman Reagan Johnson, which propelled the team to victory by a single stroke margin.  Two top ten individual state honors went to juniors Will Dennis (tied 6th) and Graham Lewis (2nd) while seniors Grant Griffin and Andrew Hudson ended their careers with an unprecedented third State Championship!

Congratulations to the players, coaches, and parents for a tremendous accomplishment.

Junior Attends Save the Children Summit

SCS junior, Kaylee O’Connor, recently received a unique opportunity through JWAC/World Affairs Council to travel to Washington, D.C., to attend the Save the Children Advocacy Summit. Kaylee was one of only 25 students from across the nation chosen for this honor.  As part of her application, Kaylee wrote a series of essays reflecting her desire to pursue humanitarian relief in underdeveloped nations.

During the all expense paid trip, Kaylee and her nominator and sponsor, SCS Social Studies department co-chair, Mrs. Kim Chaulk, heard such significant speakers as Tom Daschle, former Senate Majority Leader; Cokie Roberts, ABC and NPR political analyst; Valerie Jarrett, Senior Advisor to the President; Raj Shah, USAID Administrator; Gayle Smith, Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director of the National Security Council; Roberto Rodriguez, Special Assistant to the President for Education; Fatema Sumar, Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Michael Stoltz, Sandy Hook parent.  One of the highlights of the trip included simulating the role of a political lobbyist.

Kaylee and a small group of Texas residents shadowed Annie Toro, a lobbyist for International Medical Corporation.  They met personnel in four congressional offices, discussing their humanitarian relief experiences and advocating for the passage of a particular resolution.  Kaylee particularly enjoyed the warm and friendly manner of Congresswoman Kay Granger, with whom she  had the pleasure of talking one-on-one.

Chinese Students Visit

The World Languages Department hosted the Guilin exchange students’ visit in October. There were six students from 7th to 10th grade, two teachers and one parent visiting this year. They stayed for one week and traveled to DC for another week. The Chinese students’ visit made the world language department come to life. The students were not only language‐exchanging with our Chinese students but were culture‐exchanges, as well, with our Spanish students. It was great to see our students interacting with them with open arms and a warm welcome. Our SCS students' Christian witness shone through when they were with the Chinese visitors. All language classes are working with reading, writing, listening and speaking in the different languages. The students are progressing rapidly and learning to be global citizens.

He also volunteers his time to River City Ministries in their dental clinic.

Phase I Completed

During half time of the SCS Homecoming game, Dr. Penny Armstrong announced with great enthusiasm and gratitude, the completion of Phase One of the “Fulfilling the Mission” capital campaign.  Together, with our Board members and their spouses on the fifty yard line, Dr. Armstrong expressed her sincere appreciation to all of the generous families who made gifts to this important campaign.  Additionally, Dr. Armstrong stated that she looks forward to working with the SCS community as the school moves forward with its plans to raise funds to build a new middle school at the Prep Campus.

Phase One of the “Fulfilling the Mission” campaign allowed SCS to purchase 15 acres of land located to the east of the current entryway on the school’s Preparatory Campus.  Southwest Christian School celebrated this purchase last February and has been busy preparing the land since then.  This new land has provided the much needed space to redesign and restructure our new entry that will include a new guard house and much needed parking.  With these important additions, safety and security will be increased for our students, families, faculty and staff.  The new land has also allowed the school to connect with city water and sewer services that will provide the foundation for future growth.

Thank you again to all those who contributed to this important effort.
