Academic Support Services
Southwest Christian School is pleased to put accommodations in place for students who have a diagnosed learning difference and/or Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. In order to create an education plan, a current (within three years) diagnostic report from a licensed education diagnostician or psychologist is required.
Elementary Learning Support Program
The Learning Lab on the Elementary campus is designed to encourage and support students needing additional assistance in the classroom to be successful and meet grade level expectations. A Learning Specialist facilitates this program and works closely with enrolled students, classroom teachers, parents, and administrators to ensure educational needs are being met. There is an additional fee required for these services above tuition. The program offers support at two levels:
Level I students may struggle with time or materials management; have weak foundational skills, difficulty or limited success in the classroom.
Level II students require a current medical or educational diagnosis completed by an Educational Diagnostician or other Health Professional.
Preparatory Learning Support Program
The Learning Lab on the Preparatory Campus is designed to encourage and support the struggling student diagnosed with a learning difference and/or Attention Deficit Disorder. The Learning Lab program does not offer a separate curriculum. The purpose is to guide each student to achieve satisfactory progress and grade level expectations within the established SCS curriculum.
To be considered for acceptance in the Learning Lab, each student must complete a Learning Lab application. A complete current battery of diagnostic evaluations by a qualified diagnostician is required. A specific diagnosis of a learning disability and/or Attention Deficit Disorder is necessary for a student’s admission to the Learning Lab. To continue enrollment, a new diagnostic report is required every three years. Following these requirements, a conference will be scheduled to meet the new applicant and discuss his or her placement.
Learning Lab enrollment is limited so that the necessary, appropriate attention and guidance can be devoted to each individual student. Upon acceptance, a mandatory yearly fee is required and is payable in the Finance Office. Admission to or withdrawal from the program is permitted throughout the year. A student’s enrollment is automatically renewed each school year, if testing is current, unless the parent requests removal. If, for any reason, a student withdraws from the Learning Lab, but later requests re-admittance, the original enrollment process must be completed.
There are two levels of support for students who wish to access the Prep Learning Lab:
- As a part of their regular school day – adjustments to graduation plans can be made in the areas of Fine Arts and World Language, if necessary.
- As needed only – students may utilize the Learning Lab periodically throughout the day following initial instruction, for administration of quizzes and tests, and/or before and after school.
The cost for participation in the program is being set at $1500.00 for the 2012-2013 academic year. This cost will be added to your account through the Finance Office.
SCS Academic Support Programs support students by:
Creating a positive, accepting atmosphere that minimizes frustration
Monitoring weekly grade reports in each academic subject, discussing strategies for improvement with student, and contacting parents/teachers when necessary
Providing a liaison among the students, teachers, parents, and administration on behalf of the student
Allowing extended time on tests and in-class essays with the stipulation that all work must be completed in the same day
Providing availability of Learning Lab computers
Allowing opportunity for renewed credit for spelling corrections on tests, if the student’s diagnosis so dictates
Explaining directions to complete tests or assignments
Equipping students with appropriate strategies and skills to become self-directed and responsible
