COVID-19 Information

Southwest Christian School campuses and athletic facilities are currently closed.

SCS is announcing important calendar changes effective immediately:

  1. SCS campuses will be closed through the end of the academic school year. April 17, Governor Greg Abbott issued an Executive Order addressing all Texas schools, public, private and higher education institution, resulting classroom closures for the remaining 2019-2020 school year.

The Governor’s Executive Order renews and amends his previous orders enforcing federal social distancing guidelines for COVID-19, including closing schools to in-person classroom attendance through the May 4.

In accordance with this order, Southwest Christian School will continue with online classes and both campuses will remain closed.

  2. Online learning for all students, began on Monday, March 23 through a structured online educational environment.

  3. Effective immediately, all athletic, fine arts, or co-curricular activities scheduled through the end of the academic school year --auditions, meetings, rehearsals, practices, games, or events--are postponed until further notice and subject to cancellation if need be.

The Association for Christian Schools International has created a webpage for Coronavirus Resources that includes several links to independent resources and websites, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

SCS will continue to actively monitor the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) and will be updating our families via email, social media and this website to share information about the school’s preparations and responses. We are also following the CDC and DC Department of Health guidelines on responding to the virus.

Postponed/Canceled Events

Games / Contests (Including Academics, Athletics and Fine Arts)

TAPPS is suspending all interscholastic competition through the end of the academic school year. As of April 17, 2020, TAPPS announced the conclusion of our Spring activities.

Our school is currently a closed campus, and practice is not allowed.

SCS 50th Anniversary Gala and Auction

To comply with CDC guidelines, we will be postponing the SCS 50th Anniversary Gala and Auction. At this time, leadership is discussing possible options for the event including continuing with an online auction in the next few weeks, and/or potentially moving the event as a whole to a later date. We will update you as soon as decisions have been made.

SCS Prom 2020 and Commencement Ceremony for the SCS Class of 2020

Commencement for the Class of 2020 is tentatively scheduled for July 2020.

As of 3/15/2020, the Center for Disease Control, in accordance with its guidance for large events and mass gatherings, recommends that for the next eight weeks, organizers (whether groups of individuals) cancel or postpone in-person events that consist of 50 people or more throughout the United States. Students and families should follow this guidance on appropriate social distancing. While the situation does not call for fear or panic, it makes sense to limit physical contact.

Common sense prevails as well in the practice of good hygiene--thoroughly washing hands with soap and water, using hand sanitizer, and sneezing or coughing into your arm or elbow to reduce the spread of potential germs. Other recommendations to consider include:

  • Stay home as much as possible. Try to limit trips out of the home to those that are truly necessary (grocery stores, pharmacies, health care providers).

  • Avoid indoor gathering places such as indoor play spaces, movie theaters, arenas, plays, and concerts.

  • Stay six feet away from others as much as possible when out of the home.

  • Wave or elbow bump rather than shaking hands.

  • Socialize and work through telecommunication. It is important for kids to socialize while out of school so please allow appropriate use of social media.

If you develop respiratory symptoms or a fever, CALL BEFORE visiting your healthcare provider, an urgent care, or an ER. This is important to protect both your health care providers and other patients in the facility.

  • Anyone who has traveled to or through a level-3 CDC warned country is REQUIRED to follow CDC and department of health guidelines, to inform the school, and to self-isolate from the school and school community (as a family) for a minimum of 14 days (see guidelines here).

  • Students and family members who have recently traveled abroad may be asked to remain out of school for an extended period of time.

  • If you do opt to travel in the upcoming weeks, you must immediately inform the SCS nurses if you or a family member is advised to self-isolate or quarantined.

  • Anyone who has traveled to a region where COVID-19 is prevalent and is experiencing cold or flu-like symptoms is required to remain home until symptoms have subsided. Continue to check the CDC’s travel advisory website as well as the local department of health for any domestic travel locations for up-to-date information and recommendations.
